Enid Martinez worked for more than a decade at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project under the leadership of Lucy Calkins in New York City. Prior to that she was trained by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell as a Literacy Coordinator for Literacy Collaborative. Enid’s heart grew to the literacy work and the focus on English Language Learners during the more than ten years she was a bilingual and mainstream classroom teacher in New York State. These experiences have shaped her philosophy. Enid believes in supporting schools that believe it is possible for all children to become readers and writers.
Leading workshops, providing on-site professional development and teaching at beginning and advanced institutes across the country in both English and Spanish are just a part of what Enid brings to the educational community. Her annual Advanced sections at TCRWP institutes have predominantly focused on shared reading, word study, interactive writing, guided reading, and small group work, and served as a powerful learning space for many of her colleagues within the Project. Building on the work and thinking she shares alongside Donald Bear and his Words Their Way community, including Lori Helman and her ELL work, Enid has led numerous specialty groups on working with English Language Learners and incorporating word study in classrooms.
Enid is a sought-after presenter and regularly fields requests from a wide range of audiences. She presented at the Billy Askew conference at Texas Women’s University outside of Dallas, TX. She was a part of multiple sessions at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conferences. In Barbados, she led sessions at the Caribbean Literacy and Numeracy conference (2008) for educators and administrators from across the region. The Fall of 2010 had Enid in Dubai, UAE, leading a week-long writing institute for international schools sponsored by Chapters International. Enid also led the reading initiative, Palabras Mágicas, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Enid has presented reading and writing institutes in Barbados, Dubai, Spain, Brazil and Bahrain. She continues to have long-term professional development partnerships with schools in Ecuador, Mexico and China.
